Radian Boston

In partnership with Radian Boston, art_works co-created an art program spanning the building's lobby and resident amenity spaces in tandem with a larger design refresh led by RODE Architects.

Goal + Impact: Once home to a working shoreline and Boston’s burgeoning textile industry, the site of Radian Boston is rich with local history. Though the city’s textile industry peaked in the nineteenth century, eventually the location hosted related companies like Dainty Dot Hosiery. Given its dual maritime and commercial histories, our project goal was to connect the neighborhood's unique geological and economic pasts with art that seamlessly integrated into the building’s design. The artists we pursued offered different paths toward this conceptual objective.

Michael Zachary rendered a portrait of Boston's original shoreline in a tondo painting, while Stephen Proski's 60-foot ceramic installation unfurls across a curved wall like an ocean wave. Steven J. Cabral created abstract compositions with collaged fabric while Adrienne Shishko incorporated found textiles into a woven painting. Both Cabral and Shishko demonstrate how textiles, like buildings, carry unique markers that can be reclaimed, updated, and repurposed.

By creating opportunities for artists to expand their individual practices in bold new ways, we engineered an art program that uplifts broader visual, conceptual, and material conversations embedded within a place.
